Cipriani Big’s Humvee Reflux
Indigestion for Giuseppe?
By Geoffrey Gray
Banquet bon vivant Giuseppe Cipriani has turned over financial records to the Manhattan D.A.’s office as part of an investigation into his company’s income-tax filings, says his lawyer, Stanley Arkin. The investigation began last year after Cipriani’s ex-vice-president, Dennis Pappas, once called the “financial consigliere” for the Colombo crime family, was indicted on insurance-fraud charges. (He did jail time in the nineties for tax evasion and racketeering.) Prosecutors claim Pappas worked off the books for Cipriani in exchange for gifts, like use of an apartment and a black Humvee, and are now checking to see if other employees had similar under-the-table arrangements. “We’ve been cooperating,” Arkin says. “I like my client. He’s a good guy with a great business.”

Here's the UPDATE:

Cipriani owners plead guilty to tax evasion

Published: July 31, 2007 - 10:42 am

(AP) — New York City restaurateur Giuseppe Cipriani and his father pleaded guilty Tuesday to evading $10 million in state and city taxes.

Cipriani operates the famous Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center, as well as Harry Cipriani downtown, Cipriani Dolci at Grand Central Terminal, and Cipriani 42nd Street.

Giuseppe and Arrigo Cipriani, along with their corporation, admitted in state Supreme Court to knowingly filing falsified tax returns for 2003 and 2004.

Dennis Pappas, a reputed mob money adviser who was vice president of Cipriani USA, was sentenced July 2 to prison for cheating Social Security and three insurance companies out of more than $1 million by filing false disability claims.

I would bet that the Ciprianis have at least 5 times that, laying around in the Caymans.

I see some of the commenters on that ABC News article saying they're surprised there's no jail time. But, other people have owed the IRS that amount, or more, (Queen Lattifa, Bobby Brown e.g.) recently, and they didn't do any jail time, either.

On the Ciprianis Cooking Pasta — and the Books!

Last time we were at Downtown Cipriani, a duplicate of the Wall Street bull was on display near the sidewalk curb, where no less than two Lamborghinis were parked. The message seemed clear: Play the system well and you will be duly rewarded with a bimbo in a Lambo. Turns out, of course, that the Ciprianis themselves weren’t exactly playing by the book (having just pleaded guilty to $10 million in tax evasion), and Daily Intel has some characteristically cogent thoughts on the matter.

We were trying to put our finger on what, exactly, irks us so much about the Cipriani family's pleading guilty to evading $10 million of state and city taxes, and then it came to us. The Ciprianis' chosen milieu is ostentatious, eighties-style luxury: They run the Rainbow Room (home to, in ex–line cook Anthony Bourdain's memorable phrase, "captains of industry … eating garbage at the top of the world"), Harry's Bar in Venice, and, of course, the half-dozen eponymous gilded troughs here in Manhattan. It's thus pretty safe to say that just about all of their fortune is made off those just as fortunate. So not only do we have George Bush cutting taxes for the wealthiest one percent, we also have the people who feed this one percent hoarding the money that's now escaped taxation twice. It's the ultimate raspberry to the trickle-down theory: In the words of another master, Leona Helmsley, "only little people pay taxes." Big people post bail.

rolleyes.gif Gotta love how Grub Street calls Intelligencer 'characteristically cogent' even though just about everyone in the world knows that the Cipriani businesses aren't 'financially independent'. It doesn't take a cogent genius to figure out that alot of the money that was supposed to go to the IRS was being kept by the Cipriani 'partners'.

CIPRIANI CLAN FIGHTS TOY BUILDING BIGS OVER EVICTION BID
By DAREH GREGORIAN
CIP OFF THE OL' BLOCK: Father-and-son restaurateurs Giuseppe and Arrigo Cipriani...

August 7, 2007 -- The latest creation from the embattled Cipriani family of restau ateurs involves turning lemons into lemonade.

The family filed a $20 million lawsuit against its landlord at the Flatiron District's Toy Building yesterday - one week after the father- and- son bosses of the luxury-dining dynasty agreed to pay $10 million to set tle tax- fraud charges.

Cipriani 200 filed the suit in Manhattan Supreme Court after the owners of the building at 200 Fifth Ave. - which the catering business uses for weddings and bar mitzvahs - notified it that they were terminating its lease because of the criminal case.

The notice of termination had attached to it newspaper clippings, including a Post article, recounting the guilty pleas of 75-year-old patriarch Arrigo Cipriani and his 41-year-old globe-yachting son, Giuseppe.

Arrigo pleaded guilty to felony false tax filings, while Giuseppe, who runs the company's U.S. operations, copped to misdemeanor false filing.

"This is a heartless landlord who is trying to take advantage of the guilty plea," said Cipriani lawyer Steven Wagner.

"It's reprehensible that the landlord doesn't care about the brides who have scheduled their weddings there."

The Toy Building notice seemed to contend that the family's legal problems enabled the landlords to seize the space for themselves, the suit says.

The family feels otherwise, arguing that the lease shouldn't be canceled "based upon newspaper articles or the alleged notoriety of either Giuseppe Cipriani or companies and persons not directly involved in the business operations of the catering facilities at the Toy Building."

The family's suit calls the landlord's move just the latest in the owner's efforts "to maliciously and wrongfully interfere with and to deprive Cipriani from use of the premises and the lobby."

They said the building's new owner has been trying to kick them out, as it did other tenants, for years now.

"Cipriani has invested in excess of $10 million in improvements to the premises and creating a unique, first-class catering facility," the suit says, and it has "weddings, bar mitzvahs and other events planned to take place" there through 2009.

The suit seeks $10 million in money damages, contending the building's actions have already cost them business, and $10 million in punitive damages.

A judge yesterday signed a temporary order stopping the eviction pending a hearing at the end of the month.

"We have the law on our side," Wagner said.

The Toy Building's lawyer could not be reached last night.

Tara Reid has a new romantic target
N.Y. restaurant king Giuseppe Cipriani. The two were spotted getting frisky at Cannes' VIP Room on Friday night. "Tara and Giuseppe were making out for hours," a spy tells us. "But she was also kissing two other guys, so it's not like Giuseppe's going to bring her home to Mom." But the Italian stallion did prevail that night - he was caught leading the F-list actress back to his boat in the wee hours of the morning.
