June 8, 2007 -- JEAN-Georges Vongerichten is switching his TriBeCa menu from the flavors of Shanghai to those of Toyko. The restaurateur tells The Post's Braden Keil he'll open Matsugen, an authentic Japanese eatery, in his now-shuttered 66 space on Church Street. The four-star chef says his partners will include three brothers from Japan who are bringing over their successful concept of raw seafood and hand-cut soba specialties. "There are very few places here offering this kind of cuisine," Vongerichten says. He plans to open by the beginning of August.

I took it as renting out the space no? His name isn't on it. He is going to start to become more like Phil Suarez and be the $$$$ man . He isn't renting his food this time. Good thing cause the neighborhood is dead.

Good luck to all who work there cool.gif

LOL.
Well, then I'd have to agree I'd rather live vicariously through Abbe Diaz: Billy Joel Edition, too.

I would even go bottomless for it - I'd, somehow, figure out a way to get over the fact that I'm with three other men.

2:20 pm So let’s see, in 2003 JG paid “at least” $78,000 for four fish tanks and their upkeep. Let’s say 2,500 persons a week dined at 66 in the first year every week (lunch & dinner). JG spent roughly 66 cents per person walking thru the door for fish.
Now JG will reopen in a ‘failed’ space, the fish ‘will stay’ and the cost for the first year this time will be $93,000. If he continues to draw 10,000 persons a month, every month ( he will be on the same course he was in 2003, but that’s not the point, he will spend roughly seventy seven cents a person on fish. Perhaps this restaurant should be called 77 but at $98,000 this year the fish will stay and those who dine there will pay for them!

To this day, I still talk about the "anecdote" on pages 411-413 of Abbe's book. Namely, the "punishment" of Philippe the GM - it's probably my favorite restaurant anecdote ever.

With all the lawsuits, stealing and now this...Lois is a complete asshole and idiot in my opinion! Yeah, Abbe already told us..

What a nice time for bad press about how much shit costs at Matsugen!!!

And if JG doesn't see this now...he too is dumb. Geez..she played right into Bruni's hands.

Well I am glad the eel will survive. He is beautiful. So is the stingray...he is on the right. (I believe that is a stingray on the floor lower right)

Nice going Lois for scaring everyone away (In my humble opinion of course) I think Mr. Vongerichten needs to invest in duct tape for his Operations Director.

I wonder if he will try a steakhouse in that spot ?(not the same shit he did at TW-please!)

Well, apparently it's opened, or at least "soft-opened". From what I hear, Lois doesn't have anything to do with it and even JG isn't very hands-on, but they are making it seem like he is for press purposes? Was that part of the deal (that made Matsugen come back after they had pulled out)?

I wonder if LF's reputation preceded her all the way in Japan, that they negotiated right from the start the she's hands-off. laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

Come on you guys

What would you do if you were faced with paying rent on a 15 year lease.
He had to dump this liability with the least amount of pain possible. (Smart move)

I suspect the NYC management team will have little to do with this reincarnation.
It sounds like a management deal in disguise.

I like how Beater is making a big deal out of the 'Bertoia' chairs, when those are the same chairs that 66 had. rolleyes.gif

Also, are these the same Eames chairs that 66 had, or are they just a copy now?
Either way, Beater thinks they're so cool harping on the 'Bertoia', but they completely neglect to mention the Eames. dry.gif

The cosmetics are not going to change the problems of this location.

I am glad tht there is a bar though..........it should help alot. (as per my previous post)
If the Asian market is placed in conjunction with the new restaurant then the increased traffic will support this poor location problem.

But I still think this is a management deal. The pricing seems high, but I know they raised the rent so, do what you must

The bar looks too small tho. If they were going togo to all the trouble to put in the nec plumbing etc I would think that with all that sq footage they would build a big one like at Spice abd take more advantage of the afterwork crowd since there aren"t that many upscale options in that area. Tribeca Grand is spacious but it might be that people can't get over it's a hotel bar, it desn't draw a big crowd either.

But a small bar is still better than no bar, which is what I never understood about 66. The location is tuff but then agan it's not that far from Bouley and Odean etc and they seem to make it work.

Just speculating but I would think that this is why the deal went back to the table after it was scrapped. Ig I was JG I would try to have the lease transfered and take my name off it as much as poss. But then the lanlord would say no deal because itsnot in his best interest to tranfer JG's name off the lease, they would want to put both names on the new lease to have both parties be liable. It's also not a good deal for Matsu if JG takes his name off. The negotiations prob got off the ground again with the agreement JG is hands off except in name. NY is a tuff market for a newjack to conquer even if they have a name and huge budgets. The more garantees the better.

I've noticed that there hasn't been any press from the Matsu brothers side, so I would think that must mean that JG's PR was also part-in-parcel of the deal.
