yah i saw that too

but umm

isn't something like this relatively simple (in Big Corporate Attorney-Army-Deploying Lots-of-Friend-Having Money-is-No-Object World, i mean) to get around ??

technically, wouldn't "somebody" (Harvey ? Naomi ? the Winnick Group ?) merely have to strike a Cipriani endorsement deal ?? purchase the right to use the name ??

i dunno

sorry but personally, i'll believe it when the Beards come off the walls, the DiModica bulls get hauled away, and the logo gets stripped from the fucking awnings.

mmhmmp.

hmmmm

i wonder if harvey wants to get into the F&B business to go along with his new fashion enterprise ??

Is Cipriani Group On the Menu?
It sure looks tasty.

Now that Giuseppe and Arrigo Cipriani have pleaded guilty to tax fraud and will pay $10 million in back taxes, questions have been raised about whether their family-owned catering and restaurant empire will be able to keep its liquor license. The possibility that they might have to sell has whetted the appetites of investors and restaurateurs. Among those who, sources say, are expressing interest in the operation (which includes several restaurants, the Rainbow Room, catering halls in midtown and on Wall Street, and Harry’s Bar in Venice) is the Blackstone Group. “I introduced my friends at Blackstone to the Ciprianis,” says the Ciprianis’ attorney, Stanley Arkin, emphasizing that it was a social affair, not business. “I have a lot of friends there and I suggested that they speak, but there has been no negotiation. There is no doubt in my mind that the Ciprianis will not lose their liquor license. They have extraordinary plans for the future.” A spokesman for the Blackstone Group did not return calls, and Cipriani-group spokesman Paul Wilmot declined to comment.

SLA won't allow anyone with a felony conviction to hold a liquour license.

GC will require his lawyers to make some quick moves here.
But I did add his group on my list of possible aquistions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cipriani USA Chief Executive Giuseppe Cipriani was sentenced to three years probation for evading $10 million in New York state and city taxes, while his father, Cipriani SA owner Arrigo Cipriani, received a conditional discharge for his own tax fraud indictment.

The Ciprianis, operators of Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy, and the Rainbow Room in Manhattan, were sentenced Wednesday in New York state court in Manhattan. Both men pleaded guilty in July to filing false corporate tax returns and claiming deductions for fabricated royalties for use of the family name.

The two defendants, who have already paid $3 million in back taxes and associated fees, will have to pay another $7 million over the next three years, and must have a business monitor in place until 2011.

Arrigo Cipriani, who pleaded guilty to a felony charge of filing false corporate returns, was given a conditional discharge that will allow him to maintain his residence in Italy. Justice John Cataldo said he will also allow Giuseppe Cipriani, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of the same crime, to give notice to the court, rather than the probation department, when he travels, and said he will not be forced to wait for a response.

Judge Cataldo also granted the two men a “certificate of relief from civil disabilities,” which could allow them to keep their liquor licenses. Convicted felons without such a certificate are prohibited from holding liquor licenses. Infamous hotelier Leona Helmsley was denied such a license after being convicted of tax evasion in 1989.

Nice moves!!!

Yup, rules are made to be broken. There was never a chance in hell they would lose their license even though by law they should have. A 'legal remedy' was found (that's why lawyers get paid a lot in his case) and even if it was pushed, there would be a tremendous PR campaign if things looked bad: laid off workers, no home for the Euros, etc.

Good luck for him !

If someone is going to get away with breaking the law (OJ anyone?) thank goodness at least it's someone we like.

He's not exactly getting away with it if he has to pay it all back with interest and penalties, not to mention legal fees. wink.gif
